Combined Analysis about Vietnam’s steel imports
Vietnam is experiencing significant fluctuations in scrap and steel imports (Vietnam steel import). Japan remains the largest scrap supplier with strong growth, while the US also shows notable increases, reflecting more diversified demand. In contrast, Hong Kong recorded sharp declines both in November and year-to-date, signaling shrinking scrap trade with Vietnam.

In steel imports, China continues to dominate Vietnam steel import flows, but its 24.2% YoY drop suggests adjustments in demand or import policies. Japan and Taiwan remain important suppliers but with slower growth. Meanwhile, Indonesia and South Korea stand out with strong increases, highlighting Vietnam’s trend toward supply diversification. India is particularly volatile, with an exceptional spike in November but a steep year-to-date decline, underscoring instability in steel trade.
Overall, the Vietnam steel import and scrap import data indicate that Vietnam is shifting its import sources, maintaining traditional partners such as China and Japan while expanding into new markets like Indonesia and South Korea. This strategy helps balance demand, mitigate risks, and secure a stable supply for the domestic steel industry.
